Results of Peter’s mini-me search reveal it’s all about Rhys!
An Abercynon youngster is celebrating after winning a competition organised by one of Wales’ favourite pastry makers, searching for junior lookalikes for the current Welsh rugby team.
Caerphilly-based Peter’s ’Mini-Me’ campaign saw entries including a mini Leigh Halfpenny and a young Jamie Roberts but it was 11 year-old Rhys Owen Williams from Abercynon who stole the show – entered by mum Nicola who spotted his likeness to namesake and Wales’ favourite fly-half, Rhys Priestland.
Rhys, whose dad Stephen said his eyes ‘lit up’ when told he’d been chosen as the winner was delighted to get to meet his sporting hero yesterday as the Wales team trained ahead of today’s big game against New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium.
He also received sought-after tickets to watch the match, as well as a WRU official shirt and WRU rugby ball.
“Rhys has been down to watch some of Wales’ training sessions and to a few Cardiff Blues games with me but he’s never been to watch a full international at the stadium so he’s really excited,” said Stephen, a gym instructor at Merthyr Leisure Centre.
“For his first match to be one against the mighty All Blacks is just fantastic and I know he’s going to enjoy every minute.”
Pontypridd High School pupil Rhys said he was delighted with his prize:
“My mum thinks I look like Rhys Priestland so she entered me and I was really surprised when we got a phone call to say I’d won.
“It’s a great prize and I always enjoy watching rugby so I’m really pleased to have met Rhys and I now have my own Wales shirt to wear when I support the team!”
Peter’s marketing controller Clare Morgan added:
“We had so much fun with our last ‘Mini-Me’ competition in 2010 that we couldn’t wait to do it again and I’m delighted to see Rhys crowned as this year’s winner!”
“Here at Peter’s we are passionate about Welsh rugby, and we love to show our support to the team – well done Rhys, we know you’ll wear your Wales shirt with pride, and good luck to Wales for today!”
Simon Rowe, Sponsorship Manager for WRU said “We were really happy to support Peter’s with the campaign for the second time, not only is it fun but also brings the young Welsh rugby fans closer to the action – well done Rhys!”
